But what about the growing number of harpists who dont fit neatly in a box? What about the person who began playing in his adult years, but has moved beyond the beginner stage and achieved an intermediate or even advanced level of proficiency? The person who may have been an adult beginner at one time, but who is now performing advanced repertoire, doing chamber music, maybe even playing a few gigs here and there. They certainly arent adult beginners anymore. We have to make a new box for them: Harpists Who Began As Adults or HWBAAs. So who are these HWBAAs, what are they doing, and why should the harp community care? As an adult beginning harpist for nine years, I know what it is like to move from the stage of beginner to being able to play with others and for others. Im thrilled, says Byrne of her appointments. I love teaching at the college level. Its the most inspiring and exciting level to teach in harp for me. Byrne replaces Emily Laurence, who left her teaching posts at both schools to accept a position in the musicology department of the San Francisco Conservatory. Duke Universitys harp program offers an undergraduate music major with concentration in harp performance and UNCs program offers a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts, with emphasis in harp performance in both degrees. Byrne received her bachelors and masters degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Alice Chalifoux. I had to start at the beginning with Chalifoux and the hidden blessing in that was that it really taught me how to teach, she says. Inevel. Itdline is Oct. 1, 2006. Winners will be announced by the end of the year. Ten winners will be named, and Afghan Press will publish each winning arrangement in a new book to be available in the summer of 2007. The first prize winner in each category will receive $100 from the Somerset Folk Harp Festival and be invited to perform the winning arrangement at the 2007 Somerset Folk Harp Festival. Second and third place winners will receive $50 and $25 respectively from the Sylvia Woods Harp Center. Harpists Sunita Staneslow and Harper Tasche will judge the competition. But I love the harp and I would love to be able to play in front of people like the adult beginner mom! Thank you for writing this article, it really gave me hope! Sarita Gardner via the Internet I read the Advice column in the May/June issue of Harp Column with great interest, and would like to add my two cents. Let me say that I do believe in the value of bedside playing. I have personally witnessed many miracles and evidences of healing. A comatose patient started singing Amazing Grace along with my playing, as family members gathered for their final goodbyes. Another comatose woman opened her eyes after I played and said, "that was verrwas verat was ververHarp Column March/April 2006talk to us We want to know about your new music releases. Tsounding boardy nice!" to the amazement of her family, who were grateful to have another two hours with Grandma in a conscious state. But I offer a word of caution. I would advise harpists interested in therapeutic bedside playing to be very careful in selecting a certification program as well as a potential hospice/employer. Let me recount my experience. I dropped out of my certification program. After making payments and attending two of several required all-day training seminars, I realized I had never received any sort of receipts for monies paid nor any sort of paper acknowledgement that I had completed the two seminars. I stopped because I felt I could not continue with any "professional" training program that was too disorganized to even issue a receipt. Would they even have any records when it was time to issue a diploma? Is this organization even creditable? Not in my book! My local hospice was keen to hire me, regardless of certification, based on prior playing at their g at their hip hop harpunits. I agreed to be hired and was scheduled for new employee orientation. Everything was going fine. I have absolutely no problem whatsoever in being briefed and tested on universal precautions, basic fire safely, electrical safety, mission statements and ethics, etc. I have no problem with studying medication reactions or the psychology of dying and dealing with patients and family. But then it started getting very weird. I was informed that the next phase wasand I will swear to God above this is the absolute truthI needed to memorize and be tested on Medicare billing codes. In specific, billing codes for colostomy supplies. Furthermore, I would be tested on such hypothetical situations as: A 13-old obese family member approaches me and asks for diet tips. What would I tell her? Now it seems to me that a logical and compassionate answer would be, "Lets go ask the nurse on duty if we can see the nutritionist about this." No. I was expected to know al know all to know allllHarp Column March/April 2006ory concept in your lessons, try some of these ideas at home to review theory while practicing at the same time! If you are learning to read music When you first start working a new piece or new section in your music, take a moment to look at a measure or two in just one hand. Before playing the notes at the harp, say the note names out loud two or three times while looking at the music. Next find the correct strings and say the note names out loud as you practice the same few measures. Resist the temptation to write the letter names on the music, and instead rely on your memory and your ability to figure out the notes each time you practice. It may be a slow process at first, but you will soon recognize the note names faster and your reading skills will improve. If you are learning key signatures Take a short technical exercise with repeating patterns in the key of C that you have been working on already. For variety and a little quick theory practice, try transposing your exercises into differennnt keys. You can write down the transposed exercise on staff paper and then double check your work by playing it on the harp. Later you can try playing the exercises in different keys without writing them down first. This is a great way to review which sharps or flats go with which key, and it is a great chance to practice setting your levers or pedals correctly. If you are working on ear training and intervals Technique exercises can provide excellent opportunities to practice ear training. Sing along with your exercises on note names at first, and later try singing the types of intervals as you play them. For example if you are playing a C followed by an E, sing the interval type major third as you play each note - singing on the correct pitches major as you play C then third as you play E. Eventually you will be able to recognize different intervals as you hear them. For a challenge, try practicing your ear training skills with the free quizzes at http://www.earplane.com. ne.com. a new breed of harpistsl about calorie counting, glycemic indexes, and carbohydrate intake. At this point I walked out. I went to the hospice administrator and confronted her, asking why on earth should a harpist be required to know billing codes for colostomy bags and diets suitable for chubby teenagers. She responded that all employees are required to know this information. I responded, "then I insist that all hospice employees prepare and demonstrate a D major scale on a harp!" Her response was, "Well, thats not their job!" Bingo. My point exactly. I never was hired by that hospice, especially after being told that after a crash course on nutrition and billing codes, I would be required to pee into a cup. Now honestlyI am there to play a harp. I cannot medicate, feed, diagnose, or move a patient. I cannot even touch a patient except for, perhaps, handing them a Kleenex or the telephone. I am not there to sell a diet book or change colostomy dressings. Individual harpists from California to Florida to New Jersey responded to the crisis by donating money, music, gig clothes, harp cartsanything that could help. Ginna Paredes, of Baton Rouge, worked around the clock in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane doing everything from collecting and distributing donations to affected harpists to organizing a benefit concert at the Louisiana governors mansion. We understand each other. It takes a harpist to understand what it is to lose a harp. We work very hard to play and own them, and then to all of the sudden be without your harpit brings tears to my eyes to imagine leaving my home in a rush without it. The AHS New Orleans Chapter resumed its regular monthly meetings in November. Fisher said most people hadnt touched a harp since the hurricane and didnt think they could play, but by the end theyyyyut by the end they theyflooding. A lot of people who lost harps either didnt have insurance or thought it would be covered on their homeowners insurance, but it wasnt covered. Instruments were not the only thing harpists lost. Fisher said that the hurricane and flooding ruined most harpists music, tuners, stands, cartsjust about everything they need to play. Pretty soon donations were pouring in from harpists across the country, offering everything from music to harp carts to money. Some people in L.A. came up with the idea to give gift certificates because everyone needs something different and people were spread all over the country, said Fisher. Several businesses matched the gift certificates and donated harps and supplies to Katrina victims. (To see a complete list of donations to the New Orleans AHSchapter visit www.harpnola.org.) I said of course, and I played non-stop for two hours. After waiting six weeks for payment, I finally called hospice. I was flatly told that they do not pay non-employees. I was only asking for $60. And in their eyes, I was not even a vendor. Does the harp hath charms? Absolutely. Can it help the sick and dying. Absolutely. Inevel. ItTur group is one of the many choices that has made Kanye West uniquely successful. There are, however, some downsides to this seemingly glamorous life. Pyrotechnics were a large part of the act before us at Madison Square Garden, and we watched in horror as our stage and instruments were showered with red hot sparks and ashes from the display. At Live8 in Philadelphia, the harp kept disappearing backstage as they transitioned each bands equipment through sound checks. I would frantically search and then find it sitting safely with someone elses band. I finally had the sense to put a large piece of tape across the cover reading KANYE WEST. It stayed put after that! The most frightening moment was when a torrential downpour hovered over the Philadelphia amphitheater. A flurry of chaotic activity ensued as electrical sound equipment was covered with tarps and instruments were pushed to the few remaining dry spots backstage. I stood helplessly, trying to protect my instrument agggainst the drenching rain, until a kind stagehand appeared with rolls of garbage bags, covering and holding the harp against the gusts of wind. I learned early on that befriending the stagehands was key to the safety of my instrument. Of course there is a purely star struck side to these experiences. Ive played with Kanye at Live8 Philadelphia, on Saturday Night Live, MTV, and at Madison Square Garden, to name a few. The backstage scenes of the rock star world are fascinating and full of adventure. Our artist trailer at Live8 was sandwiched between Stevie Wonder and the Black Eyed Peas, and wandering around the artist compound, accessible only with special credentials, I was able to socialize with Jon Bon Jovi, Will Smith, Beyonc, and others. One of the songs Im particularly fond of performing with Kanye is Heard Em Say, featuring Adam Levine of Maroon 5. This ballad is richly textured in its soulfulness, with beautiful showcases of glisses and lyrical melodies for adults onlythe harp. My favorite moment was at rehearsal for Saturday Night Live when Adam wandered over to me, sat next to the harp and carefully plucked a few strings commenting, This is so coolI love the harp! Performing with Kanye West has opened many doors and generated new possibilities for me outside of the classical world. It has also re-ignited an interest in an instrument that is widely regarded as romantic. As the bronze medalist in the First USA International Harp Competition and a former AHS Concert Artist, it was difficult for me to imagine how classical harp could fit into the rap world, but it does, and unbelievably well. It is rewarding to prove its versatility in this dimension, and I will continue to pursue unique ways of broadening the harps audience. z Harp Column September/October 2005playing 4 mmmmmmnnnooonnnnnnnnnmmmnnnnnnnnnnnmppprrrpppqqqqqqpppqqqqqqqqqppppppqqqppppppqqqqqqqqqpppqqqoopqqqsssqqqsssrrrrrrsssrrrrrrssssssrrrssssssrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrq~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~wwwxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxwwwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA addition to teaching, Byrne is an active performer in North Carolina, playing with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Ballet. This book contains 10 pop standards for pedal harp. These arrangements are simple and uncluttered, yet full of lush harmonies. There is an optional four-measure segue between all pieces except the last two. These transitions will accomplish the modulations between keys and allow you to link several pieces together in medley style. Consideration was given to making page turns manageable, and all pedal markings are included. Pool selected 10 diverse songs that span several decades and include such composers as Henry Mancini and George Gershwin. Anyone who wants to play pop standards should have this book. Every harpist should have Clair de Lune in their repertoire, and thanks to Barbara Brundage and Seaside Press, it can now be played on lever harp. She has done an outstanding job of transcribing this piece with few concessions made for lever changes. Like the popular pedal harp version by Victor Coeur, this is written in the key of D major. A lever harp sho(continued from page 26) z uld be tuned at least in the key of F, as there are several B-flats required. Tuning to E-flat works as well. This is not an arrangement for anyone who is reluctant to move leversthere are 30 changes in six pages. But the diamond-shaped notation makes them easy to cogitate quickly and they are all logically placed and manageable with practice. Fingering would be helpful but is not provided. This music is suitable for the advanced lever harp player and worth the effort to master. Those who love Baroque music will enjoy Three Encores from the Late Baroque, arranged and edited by Ellis Schuman for Lyon & Healy Publications. The first selection, Allegro by C.P.E. Bach, is a buoyant piece that requires clear articulation. Excellent fingering is provided along with all pedal changes. Air, by Johann Ludwig Krebs, offers a charming contrast to the other selections in the group. Fingerings are especially helpful in the ornaments found in this piece. Gavotte, by William Boyce, completes the set. This is Ma joyful dance that lifts the spirit. This assortment is an excellent resource for wedding music or concert programs that intermediate to advanced players will want to have ready in their repertoire. The description of the music and composers found on the first page provides useful information for recital program notes. Deborah Henson-Conant has arranged the traditional jig Off She Goes and written an original reel, Shes Gone, for two harps, lever or pedal. It is not difficult and is fun to play. The music, published by Golden Cage Music, includes a full score and separate parts for Harp 1 and 2. Measure numbers are provided every four measures and rehearsal markings are provided every four or eight measures. There are two eight-measure themes for each piece that are repeated with variations. Henson-Conant uses harmonics, p.d.l.t., etouffes, and scale glisses for variation. Both parts are about equal in difficulty. If you could use something for two (or more) harps with a Celtic flavor, youll enjoy this jig and reel. Sylvia Woods has done an excellent job of compiling 22 Romantic Songs for pedal or lever harp. She has selected a variety of tunes from golden oldies to recent hits. The lyrics are included with the melody, just like piano music. This feature, rarely seen in harp music, is tremendously helpful if youre trying to interpret an unfamiliar song. The book is organized by difficulty, with the easiest pieces at the beginning. However, none of the arrangements are really difficult. More advanced players will appreciate the chord symbols, which make embellishing these arrangements easy, and the arranger has retained the original harmonies on most songs. This is a useful collection for beginners who want to play pop tunes without struggling, and for more advanced players who will have the basis on which to build more elaborate arrangements. Anyone who ever heard Jack Nebergall play will remember his tasty arrangements and lush harmonies. And then when I was about 11, I heard someone play a concertina, and I decided thats what I wanted to play. So I took up the concertina, and I never intended to learn any more instruments after that. But then my whole family was at a summer school, the Willie Clancy Summer School in County Clare in Miltown Malbay. We were there for a week and my youngest sister, who was 7 at the time, saw a harp in a shop window, and she just got a notion and started to pester my parents, saying, Oh, I want to learn the harp! None of us really understood where she got this notion, because I had never seen anybody playing the harp live or heard a harp, and neither had she. But it just happened that at the same week my father came across a brochure advertising one of Janet Harbisons summer schools in Glencolmcille in Donegal, where you could rent a harp for the week to try it out and see if you liked it. As it just so happens, Carol is also my Mom. One summer, when Harp Column was still based in Ann Arbor, Mom came to visit and discovered a cheap, not-very-good lap harp that had been relegated to a shelf in the closet of my harp studio. At the end of her week-long stay she was still plucking awaI said, Why dont you take it home? I gave her a few pointers, a copy of Sylvia Woods Teach Yourself to Play the Folk Harp, and sent her on her way. Months went by until I saw Mom again at Christmas. Lo and behold, there was the harp! She was still playing it, and furthermore, she had made it half-way through Teach Yourself. The problem was, she wasnt doing a very good job of teaching herself, so we were both thrilled to discover that a professional harp teacher lived in her town.
